About Nigeria

ABOUT Nigeria

Nigeria, also called officially as the Federal Republic of Nigeria, is a country located in West Africa and the country shares its borders with Niger, Chad, Cameroon and Benin. Nigeria is a federal republic consisting of 36 states and its capital Abuja is located in the Federal Capital Territory. Nigeria gained independence from the British rule on October 1, 1960. The country has a wide variety of cultures with more than 250 ethnic groups residing and over 500 distinct languages being spoken within the country. The three largest ethnic groups of the country are the Hausa – Fulani, Yoruba and Igbo groups. These ethnic groups make up for over 60% of the total Nigerian population. The official language of Nigeria is English with the southern part of Nigeria practicing Christianity and the northern part of Nigeria practicing Islam. The country ensures that there is freedom among people to practice their faiths.
