About Greece

About Greece

Greece, the southernmost of the countries of the Balkan Peninsula. Greece is home to over 2,000 islands, with approximately 170 of them being inhabited. Several of the easternmost Aegean islands are located just a short distance from the Turkish coast. The capital of the country is Athens, which experienced rapid expansion during the latter part of the 20th century. Attikí (known as Attica in ancient Greek), the region surrounding the capital, currently houses around one-third of the total population of the country. Greece is a nation that embodies European, Balkan, Mediterranean, and Near Eastern characteristics. It is situated at the intersection of Europe, Asia, and Africa and carries the legacies of Classical Greece, the Byzantine Empire, and nearly 400 years of Ottoman Turkish dominion.
Greece's Mediterranean climate experiences various regional and local variations due to the country's diverse geography. During winter, low-pressure disturbances from the North Atlantic Ocean move southward, bringing warm, moist westerly winds. When these disturbances reach the Aegean region, they can bring in cold air from the eastern Balkans, which are exposed to climatic extremes from Eurasia due to the absence of western influences, thanks to the shelter provided by the Dinaric Mountain system.
